Penn State alumni and Houston-area amateur inventor, Richard Engelbrink, enjoyed a lifelong interest in all things health and fitness related. While attending college, he read extensively on exercise physiology, health, fitness and more. This knowledge of the human body helped him develop optimal nutrition, exercise and stretching regimens to keep his body in top condition. His teammates were careful to listen to Richard Engelbrink’s tips for stretching before a run. They could see the benefits it offered Richard since he took first place in nearly every local competition.

Richard Engelbrink ran sprints at Penn State and frequently took home top honors for his school. Stretching exercises for Richard were a critical part of his ability to perform so well. He followed a strict stretching routine for both before and after running events which included tips such as:

  • Perform a light warm-up to avoid overworking cold muscles
  • Never bounce into or force a stretch
  • Hold each stretching position in place for 10 to 15 seconds
  • Never hold your breath while stretching
  • Engelbrink stretches his whole body, not just the legs
  • Richard never forgets to stretch all the muscles after a run as well

Engelbrink Runs a Marathon in Record Time

At 80 years old, he proudly displays a newspaper clipping above his mantle which reads, “Englebrink Runs a Marathon in Record Time.” He smiles as he fondly recounts those bygone years as a bright, young track and field star at Penn State. His would always remind his teammates about his stretching tips, and they would see that Richard Engelbrink stretches after a long run as well as sprint work.

Now, as an amateur inventor, Richard firmly believes in the value of inventing new gadgets and technologies to help enhance the lives of all those around him. He sought to fuse his lifelong love of health and fitness with his inventing skills. He took an active interest in medical advancements, especially new technologies to detect and treat brain tumors early in the process and also inventions that help runners and track and field athletes.

If you look at his training, you’ll find that Richard runs, jumps, and throws. He knows that overall fitness is important. Engelbrink’s track and field advice for parents is that they don’t let children run exclusively. This can lead to overuse injuries. While it may also lead to great lower-body fitness, it may leave a runner with no core or upper body fitness at all. To really be the best, you need full body fitness with comprehensive workouts.

Potential workouts can include box jumps, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, jumping rope and even light weight lifting. The focus should still be on running every day, but these other activities need to be incorporated, as well.

On top of that, it teaches many valuable life lessons. Richard Engelbrink ran track and field and he learned about dedication, motivation and team spirit. He learned how to really give his best and how to push himself beyond his limits. That type of outlook can help people in business, in personal relationships and in other sports. It’s invaluable knowledge, and it has helped define his life.
